You got an answer to your question, didn't you, from the depeloper of Clonezilla? Apparently there aren't any other suggestions or solutions, except using another tool instead of Clonezilla. So what more do you expect?

The situation is fairly common
I posted an example that I thought should work but I felt needed more information (ie -icds and -k2 on a drive using 20GB of 500GB - so nearly all empty blocks but not enough description for using -k2)

Thanks for your feedback. This is really a challenge for Clonezilla to do that. As we mentioned, Partclone is a block-based program. Hence it's not easy to lift the limitation.
BTW, this is open source, free software. If you are not satisfied with it, you have all the source codes so you can improve it by yourself, or pay someone to do that. Since now you pay nothing, you can not ask too much. People on this forum answer your questions voluntarily.
