I have a 250GB notebook hard drive that had SMART errors. The drive still boots up and runs, but I wanted to clone it and put it on a new drive before the drive failed. I selected the default options except I added the option to remove paging and hibernation files and the rescue mode option. There were 3 partitions. The first went smoothly, sda2 had errors but seemed to be skipping over them and did complete, then it started on recovery partition, sda3, and I left as it continued. When I came home tonight, I saw this on the screen...

    cat: /home/partimag/name/sda2.ntfs-pct1-img.gz.bm: Input/output error
    pigz: abort: internal threads error

Then a few blank lines, then

    Partclone fail. please check /var/log/partclone.log!
    cat: /home/partimag/name/sda2.ntfs-pct1-img.gz.bn: Input/output error
    cat: /home/partimag/name/sda2.ntfs-pct1-img.gz.cb: Input/output error
    cat: /home/partimag/name/sda2.ntfs-pct1-img.gz.ce: Input/output error
    cat: /home/partimag/name/sda2.ntfs-pct1-img.gz.cf: Input/output error
    cat: /home/partimag/name/sda2.ntfs-pct1-img.gz.cq: Input/output error
    cat: /home/partimag/name/sda2.ntfs-pct1-img.gz.ct: Input/output error
    cat: /home/partimag/name/sda2.ntfs-pct1-img.gz.ed: Input/output error
    cat: /home/partimag/name/sda2.ntfs-pct1-img.gz.ef: Input/output error
    cat: /home/partimag/name/sda2.ntfs-pct1-img.gz.eg: Input/output error
    cat: /home/partimag/name/sda2.ntfs-pct1-img.gz.el: Input/output error
    cat: /home/partimag/name/sda2.ntfs-pct1-img.gz.fh: Input/output error
The image of this partition is broken: sda2
    Press "Enter" to continue......

When I press Enter, it starts again with the box and says starting to check image. In the box it says read ERROR: Success.

    It then says:
pigz: skipping: <stdin>: corrupted -- invalid deflate data (invalid code lengths set)
    pigz: abort: internal threads error

Partclone fail, please check /var/log/partclone.log !
The image of this partition is broken: sda3
    Press "Enter" to continue......

    Press enter and says:

Broken partiion images were found, or some of them are not checkable in this image: name
    Press "Enter" to continue......

Hitting enter and alot of text rolls up the screen then again Press "Enter" to continue...

Then gives me options to poweroff, reboot, enter cmd line prompt, etc.

First question is how can I get this cloned properly, second is where are the log files, I don't know where to look for them. I know there are bad sectors, but I thought rescue mode would just skip over them and clone what it could. Did it?

Thanks for any help with this.

This kind of I/O error is normlay from hardware failure. Are you sure your hard drive is OK?

    Steven.
