using kubuntu Linux 24.04 - latest update
downloaded version Clonezilla ...15 - created memory stick - booted - good boot until after squashfs.
Complete freeze at utils/win64/syslinux64.exe - waited and waited but nothing happened
Tried again - same results
downloaded plucky alternate - installed on same memory stick
same freeze at utils/win64/syslinux64.exe
this time after pressing Return got a lot of error messages - unfortunately too fast to copy
boot process continued - later Cancel button did nothing other than moving to the next item
Will try to get some sense of what the error messages passed on
tried again - same result - took a few pictures - none good enough for public consumption
main points - "amdxdna 0000:79.00.1 drm ERROR aie2_init: failed to request_firmware amdgpu/1502_00 . . .
further down - amdgpu 0000:78:00.0 amdgpu fatal error during GPU init
sorry best I can do - don't have any idea what this reports
Hope this helps

further info - I need a a backup so I went to my previous backups and I located version 3.2.2.-5(?).
I went through the hoops to make a bootable version just as before and guess what?
The boot process froze at the exact same place!
Makes me believe that something in my update process has made your program unusable.
There is nothing that I am capable of investigating - my knowledge is limited
I'll keep an eye on the forums and bug lists to see if this shows anywhere.
this has caused me many problems
I found the problem is with amdgpu-dkms but I did not find a cause.
I made so many changes and edits that I was backed into a corner. I reinstalled Kubuntu 24.04.2 (latest).
After the install I tried your latest stable with built in OS and again guess what? It died at the same place!!!
If the problem exists at my end then your OS should not fail since it does not use my OS. If it is something with my machine then it should not be repeated with a fresh install. If it is at your end then it has happened recently since only last week your software worked as expected.
Well enough is enough, I changed my backup medium to balena-etcher - clone disk.
I will try your software occasionally to see if the issue still exists.
Thank You

Next time you can try alternative release of Clonezilla live, i.e., Ubuntu-based one:
https://clonezilla.org/downloads.php
Thank You for the reply. It was appreciated.
Unfortunately prior to contacting you I downloaded every version(?) I could and I tried them.
All resulted in the same. The program stopped in the same place.
The only thing I did not try was loading your program from another computer at our place to see whether the amdgpu components were the fault. Not yet anyhow!
Thank You

Next time please take some photos about the error messages on the screen then share them. It would be easier for us to debug.
Thanks.
Thank You for the reply. It was appreciated.
My original post said, "got a lot of error messages - unfortunately too fast to copy".
A subsequent post said, "took a few pictures - none good enough for public consumption". The images were blurry. I took the parts out that I could read and posted them.
I can probably reproduce the error messages if you can advise me how to electronically capture the data. This is above my knowledge level.
Thank You
p-bea
Those steps are still in the early stages so GNU/Linux has not take over the system. Hence it's not easy to electronically capture the data.
However, you can take a video. That should be good enough for us to debug for you.
Thanks.
Thank You for the reply.
My very old (like me) camera does not do video. I thought about getting a friend with a cellular telephone to capture the error but I did something else first.
I reloaded all the "amd" files that I had access to.
ALL other programs work flawlessly.
I reinstalled the two stable clonezillas on two separate memory sticks (a lot of work).
The end result is that I can no longer reproduce the error messages. The boot process still stalls after utils/win64/syslinux64.exe - 100% with no recovery except power down.
I booted your program on another computer and the results were normal!
My testing has concluded that a command after the above is causing the problem and it is restricted to my computer.
I have searched high and low but I cannot find a like issue.
I will keep trying.

OK, please keep us posted.
Hello . . .
I have good news and bad news. I have not been updated on this bug so I must assume that you are unaware of a significant turn of events. Your latest stable version has corrected this issue. Instead of a complete freeze, I get a very long (in computer time) pause and then boot-up continuation. I no longer must use dd. It took dd 18 minutes to back up my system disk.
The bad news is the fonts are gawd-awful. I tried all the available system start options and they seem to be the same as the two attached images show. They appear to be chr & space, chr & space . . ..
Hope this helps.

Which version of Clonezilla live did you use? Did you mean 3.3.0-33?
yes
It's only when asking the keymap or the fonts for all the TUI are distorted?
Thank You for the reply but I have no idea what you wrote. I am not a techie! I do not understand, 'keymap' or 'TUI'.
To elaborate, the fonts are distorted up until the 'Start Clonezilla' message shows then the fonts are normal.
Hope this helps.
p-bea
I meant if you continue even after you have distorted fonts when choosing keyboard and language in the dialog menu, are the rest of fonts still distorted? If so, please take some photos and share that.
Thanks.
The fonts return to normal after the 'Start Clonezilla' message.
Hope this helps
