Normally this is Linux kernel/hardware support issue.
How about different versions of Clonezilla live?
    Like 20150210-vivid, 20150210-utopic or 2.3.2-18 on
    http://clonezilla.org/downloads.php
They comes with different version of Linux kernel so the results might be different.

    Steven.

Today I've tried 20150210-vivid. After on the screen the following line appears:

    starting version 218
it stops. Nothing heppens then. All I can is just reboot with Alt+Shift+SysRq+B hotkey. I remember in a past it worked but not remember actually when. Any ideas?

BTW, my desktop system (Kubuntu 14.10) never failed to boot through KMS - several years already. With different kernels.

Current Clonezilla: 20150608-vivid and 20150617-wily also fails to boot through KMS. It stops on next line:

fb: switching to radeondrmfb from VESA VGA

It's not freezes but stops and does nothing. Please, fix it.

Could you please show me how you start KVM with Clonezilla live iso? I'd like to reproduce the issue here with the same method.

    Steven.

I'm not starting Clonezilla through KVM, I starting it from USB Flash drive through grub4dos.

Oh, it's KMS, not KVM. My bad.
So how about the normal mode instead of KMS? Any issue?

    Steven.

With normal mode it's ok but except that screen resolution not optimal as it should be. Many versions ago KMS worked well and screen resolution, also fonts, looked better.

P.S. I have wide screen display with 1680x1050 native resolution so nor 600x800 nor 1024x768 aren't the optimal options.

So how about giving Clonezilla live 2.4.2-11 a try?
    http://clonezilla.org/downloads.php
It comes with Linux kernel 4 so the results might be different.

    Steven.

Yes, it comes with Linux 4 but it has no nonfree firmware for my card:

[drm:radeon_pci_probe[radeon]] *ERROR* radeon kernel mode setting for R600 or later requires firmware-linux-nonfree

Thanks. We use the Linux kernel from our upstream, i.e. Ubuntu. This kind of kernel regression is from our upstream. Therefore please give upstream live system a try, e.g. The wily one:
    http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/
If the issue still remains, please report to Ubuntu bugs system and once it's fixed in the upstream, for sure it will be fixed in Clonezilla live.

Look, I'm using Kubuntu/Xubuntu several years already and there was no problem with KMS on my machine:

    ~$ uname -a
    Linux p5q3 4.1.0-040100-generic #201506220235 SMP Mon Jun 22 06:36:19 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

    ~$ lsb_release -a
    No LSB modules are available.
    Distributor ID: Ubuntu
    Description: Ubuntu 15.04
    Release: 15.04
    Codename: vivid

P.S. But anyway I can check Wily if it'll help of course.

Just checked Wily daily iso. No problems as I expected. The same as with 14.04, 14.10, and 15.04.
