Will only start in fail safe mode and then reports that it can't find any supported network cards.

Maybe try this ubuntu-based clonezilla live: http://free.nchc.org.tw/clonezilla-live/experimental/ubuntu-based/ It comes with newer kernel so the hardware support should be better.
