The latest version of Clonezilla hangs when trying to install Grub legacy.

I'm trying to reinstall Arch i686 and it doesn't work.

Might I say this is not a good idea to mess with the MBR when a person already has the boot loader installed to their MBR, it shouldn't be assumed that the boot loader needs reinstalling...

If a person is restoring an image, it should be assumed that they still have a working boot loader and even the Beginner option should have an option to ask the end-user if they want to reinstall a boot loader or not to touch the MBR...

Can we PLEASE get a fix for this ASAP? Or please, just give the Beginner an option to not touch the MBR at least until you can figure this out...

THANKS

Is your grub1 is on ext4?
If so, please give Ubuntu-based Clonezilla live a try, e.g. 20120227-precise or 20120227-oneiric.
The patched grub1 from Ubuntu will work for grub1 on ext4, while the one from Debian won't.

    Hi Steven,

My bad for not looking more into the expert options, but as someone that only backed up a partition and did a 'Beginner' save part and restore part I did not think Clonezilla was going to mess with the bootloader.

Let's think about that for a few seconds, a person only wants to back and restore a partition should not have the beginner section or any section touching the MBR or bootloader, after all this has nothing to do with backing up a 'PART', not a FULL disk backup, which is where I'd expect to see something like this.

So all I'm saying, so someone else doesn't fall into this situation and create a mess for themselves, it would be nice in the Beginner section if there was an option to mark/unmark if you wanted the bootloader re-written...

    THANKS

    That's true.
However, sometimes it's a must to re-run grub-install otherwise the restored OS won't boot. Especially if the destination disk is different from the source one.
    Any suggestion?

    Steven.

I mainly run Slack so that's lilo and I've only used clonezilla a few times on Arch with grub legacy, so I really don't know if when restoring only a part this is a problem, as long as grub is installed to the MBR, which is where I always install, not to the partition...

    THANKS

The grub-reinstall will only take effect when grub is found in the image. Therefore if yours is lilo, grub-install won't be rerun.
"when restoring only a part this is a problem" -> It's the same. The option "-g auto" will be used no matter it's in the mode "restoredisk" or "restoreparts".

I understand this is only for Grub, but when I first used this on Arch with legacy grub and did this as 'beginner' Clonezilla over wrote my Grub on the MBR and messed it up and I couldn't reboot it and had to reboot up with the Arch cd, and chroot into it and then reinstall my grub to get it up and running, let me tell you it wasn't fun...

So as I said before, for all the Grub users out there, I think it's best in the 'Beginner' section to have a section for Grub to reinstall it or not reinstall it...

If I'm only backing up a partition and grub is on the MBR I see no reason this has to be touched, that's all...

    THANKS

    OK, thanks for the suggestion.
Will do in the future release.
