Most probably you have reused a build directory for re-configuring with
different configure options. This does not work. Always run "../configure ...."
in a fresh (empty) subdirectory of the clisp top directory.

If you actually want to build with FFI, you need to first install libffcall.

Getting an error when compiling with "--with-threads=flavor"

Compiling without MT is fine and there are no extras. But when using
"./configure --with-threads=flavour" I have to manually run `make
CFLAGS+="-lpthread"`. But still it doesn't compile. It complains about not
having package FFI. For further information I have given the output of
`make CFLAGS+="-lpthread"` below which I have ran from the project root:

This is now done. If you want to run checks that include unportable ones,
and you are prepared to deal with failures, run

  make check extracheck

if this is a regression, you might want to try 'hg bisect' to pinpoint
the commit which broke MT.

You should view the change in 'hgview' (*). I added one file (newer.c) and
removed one file (test.m4); the rest are imports from gnulib - maintained
at gnulib.

You are not distinguishing the intended effect of the TEST_NT code and
the actual effect.

The intended effect was, as you say, just a convenience for clisp developers
working on modules.

The actual effect was a build failure on OpenBSD (with the default 'make'
and default shell of OpenBSD).

Please note that "Common Lisp: A Gentle Introduction to Symbolic
Computation" is about Common Lisp the _language_, not CLISP the
implementation of the ANSI CL standard.
Think about it as the difference between C as the _language_ vs GCC the
_compiler_.
There are many C compilers (e.g., MSVC, clang) and there are many ANSI
Common Lisp implementations (e.g., SBCL, GCL).

CLISP documentation is written in DocBook/XML 4.5.
(It was originally plain text, I converted it to HTML and then to
DocBook/XML).
It would probably be a good idea to upgrade to DocBook 5.

that we don't know how to use), we will probably reject it.

You added a dozen files and hundreds of lines of code to replace the
korn shell extension already available on almost all platforms (Linux,
MacOS, Cygwin - which probably cover 90+% of those who actually compile
CLISP).

The platforms which do not have bash or korn shell are not used for
active CLISP development and **RE**compiling modules is NOT a big deal
for them, so `rm -rf module-dir` is fine.

Are you sure this was a good idea?

I would advise you to first learn Common Lisp:

It’s quite different from emacs lisp.

That said, both emacs lisp and Common Lisp already have a /= function that I assume would do the same as what you envisioned for !=.

Anyways, Common Lisp is specified by a standard and one doesn’t add functions to the standard library willy-nilly.  All the standard functions are already implemented in clisp, since it’s a fully conforming implementation of the Common Lisp language.

clisp developers are mostly only active in this mailing list.

but questions about clisp internals will be better answered here.

Ah, thanks for explaining. I had overlooked this use.

I've now replaced this use of an unportable shell primitive with a small
auxiliary program. It may also need some porting effort (for native Windows,
maybe), but at least these portability problems will not propagate upward
into portability problems regarding the 'make' program.

* src/pathname.d (get_path_info): When result==linklen, retry
readlink() because this means that linkbuf was too small.

Not related to clisp.
I am using the default version of mercurial without much modifications.
Thus it produces the merge conflicts given in the screenshot(attachment).
By default it uses "vimdiff" for the purpose which I wasn't familiar with.
I am going to explain the situtation:
After 1st commit on *default* branch:
```
#include <stdio.h>

int main
```

After 1st commit on *xyz* branch:
```
#include <stdio.h>

int main()
{
  return 0;
}
```

After 2nd commit on *default* branch:
```
#include <stdio.h>

#define MAX(x, y)     (x > y ? x : y)

int main
```

Expected code after merging xyz branch into default branch:
```
#include <stdio.h>

#define MAX(x, y)     (x > y ? x : y)

int main()
{
  return 0;
}
```

In what way I should accept/discard hunks/diffs/parts of code to obtain the
expected result either in vimdiff or ediff. If there is an alternative way
to solve this problem then please share.

Actually there seems to be already a gnulib module providing this:

Though I doubt that gnulib is correcting the issues we have with
/proc here yet. Above module depends on the readlink module:

This is correcting possible trailing slashes on Solaris, but does not
mention /proc in any way. Perhaps we could add the "fix" (retrying
with a bigger buffer) and only include it on specific hosts?

Btw, which system is this appearing on? Only in /proc, right? Wouldn't
it make more sense to retry with a bigger buffer only when the path is
in /proc?

I think this is a general risk that the build machine can be different
in some unknown way from the user box.

An egregious example would be the build machine be free of the [Pentium
FP bug](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentium_FDIV_bug) thus building
the Linux kernel without the workaround.

However, Daniel's point is, IMO, quite solid.
The workaround should be in gnulib, not CLISP sources.
We should not have to think about this.

Ideally gnulib should provide

        char *gnulib_readlink(char* path);

which will malloc() it's return value (which the caller will free()).
I don't think the cost of malloc/free is on par with readlink which
requires disk access.

Autoconf tests are a good idea in general. But here there's a problem: The
/proc file system can be mounted or unmounted. In chroot environments it is
normally unmounted. Therefore it is possible that on a build machine of a
distro, there will be no /proc file system, whereas on the machine of the
end user, there will be.

links?
Then we could write an autoconf test for it to only enable correcting code
when necessary.

Though this kind of fix shouldn't be in CLISP code IMHO. That's what gnulib
is for.
