    One of the truly unappealing features of Shortcuts is the boxed arrow.
I found a note on this with an "blank" icon (Blank.ico) do be placed in C:\Windows\System32 and a Registry script to implement it...
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons]
"29"="C:\Windows\system32\blank.ico"
Just a thought.
Easy way. Use Winaero's Shortcut Arrow Editor: http://winaero.com/comment.php?comment.news.156

Thanks! - the only one I could find was fxvisor32.msi and fxvisor64.msi - these did not work in Win8, hence the Registry hack I found.
