Like Win7 or Start8, when expanding the programs in dual column mode, expand the programs inside of the first column instead of cascading menus. In dual column mode add an option in the top left to open the Modern Start menu, like Start8 does.

What benefit does that give if the expanded submenu covers its main menu?

Good news for you yngdiego. The latest Classic Shell version 3.9.0 has 100% lookalike of the Windows 7 Start Menu. Basically, Classic Shell is now 2 different implementations of the Start Menu in 1 product. :)
