I am not a clamav designer or spokesperson. However, Clam was initially designed for a linux environment - windows ports are slow and not easy to code. I have had excellent results using clam as an email scanner for my qmail cluster here at Atlantic.Net.

Try focusing your scan on files and folders most likely to be infected ... temps, etc. Clam is a bit of a resource hog.
