yes, that was correct in those versions the rainbow colormap gives you 10 colors and the rest of them are in various shades of gray. This feature will be changed somewhat in the next version. But the general reason is that too many colors would make it hard to differentiate groups.

In the case when part of the links is depicted in various shades of gray and they are predominant on the map, this raises additional questions and requires additional clarification.

Colored spectrum partly in grey CiteSpace 5.5.R1 and 5.5.R1.
As far as the design is concerned, you are supposed to use the default colormap to depict the time slices and use the rainbow to depict cluster memberships so you can limit to the largest 10 clusters. If you use it this way, the gray color issue can be avoided.
