Logisim, a graphical design and simulation tool for logic circuits, is now available as a non-beta, open-source program for the first time. This new version, named 2.0.0, has a few new features, polishes off some minor bugs, and includes a distribution specifically for Windows computers.
Besides the Windows distribution, the most significant new feature is the "component tip," which displays information about circuit components temporarily when the mouse hovers over it. This is particularly useful with subcircuits, where hovering over an input or output of the subcircuit box will report the label associated with the corresponding pin in the underlying circuit layout. A number of other components feature component tips also. (The project options allow you to turn off this feature if you find them irritating.) Previous versions had a "Revert To Defaults" option, but the reverting was incomplete in that it did not include the default options relating to tools. Beta 18 repairs several minor bugs, most relating to how selection operations deal with wires (and particularly undoing those selection operations). There is one notable change in designed behavior: When creating a wire that crosses a component's connection point, the wire is split at that point.
Under the hood, Beta 18 uses a completely rewritten system for manipulating wires and selections. This new system allows the correcion of several minor bugs that were previously present; but a new system is inevitably prone to new bugs that did not exist before.
