[Chrootssh-users] configure on Fedora core 1 - won't

Having this problem with configure:

./configure and ./configure --with-md5-passwords
produced the same result

configure: error: *** zlib missing - please install
first or check config.log ***

tail config.log ->
#define PAM_TTY_KLUDGE 1
#define SPT_TYPE SPT_REUSEARGV
#define STDC_HEADERS 1
#define _FILE_OFFSET_BITS 64
#define _PATH_PASSWD_PROG "/usr/bin/passwd"

configure: exit 1

Attempting to configure on Fedorea Core 1 server
(fresh install). Thought I met all the requirements. 
zlib-1.2.0.7-2
openssl-0.9.7a-33.10
