WordPress is strictly a blogging application.  It's a fairly good one, and 
popular, but it's a blogging application.

Drupal is a full-on CMS/Content Management Framework.  It can be used for a 
blog (I use it for that as do thousands of other people), but can also be 
used for building web sites, web applications, online communities, etc.  

I am biased since I am a Drupal developer and use Drupal professionally in my 
day job. :-)  However, I would also recommend Drupal over WordPress because 
Drupal was a founding member of the GoPHP5 project[1], while Matt Mullenweg, 
WordPress' lead developer, is still ranting about how no one needs PHP 5 and 
WordPress shouldn't move to it, even though the PHP development team has 
announced that PHP 4 has less than six months left to live.  (No further 
releases after the end of this year.)  (Yes, I am biased in that, too. <g>)
