If the primary intent of a list is for mass distribution with occasional replies back to the sender, then yes, Reply-All gets in the way. If the primary intent of a list is discussion, then not having Reply-All set breaks the discussion. Repeatedly. At best, it means that people get multiple copies of replies to them because one goes to them and one goes to the list. (Am I the only one that *really* hates that?) I've heard the arguments against Reply-All. They all come down to "but it's so *hard* to reply to an individual then if I want to." See the first point; on a discussion list, you rarely *want* to reply to an individual. And it's only "hard" if your mail reader is pine or mutt or something equally ancient. If you're using an MUA developed this century, it has a copy and paste function that works quite well for the rare cases you want to reply to an individual. Viva Reply-All!
