The pathauto is an essential drupal module. Great recommend. I don't know much about writing php inside drupal. You might be interested in the workflow module and possible the views module. The workflow module allows you to setup actions triggered by an event, such as a new bid in your case. The views module allows remolding the display of your drupal data to present information outside the normal drupal way. Hope that helps.
