Yeah- you build the template system in Javascript. I won't detail why thats more intelligent since you don't claim to care. ----- Original Message ---- From: Ryan Guthrie <sok...@gm...> To: Discussions of PHP-related topics among members of the Chicago PHP User's Group. <chi...@li...> Sent: Monday, March 17, 2008 10:54:28 AM Subject: Re: [chiPHPug-discuss] Threadless/Skinnycorp is hiring a couple PHP peeps That statement is so vague and biased that I had to debate for some time whether it is worth responding to. This is my last reply on the subject since I don't want to argue about Smarty here, but if you have any actual facts as to why using Smarty is bad, and even better, know of a template system that fits your 'web 2.0' notions, I would like to hear it. Calling it 'cancer' and not 'web 2.0' isn't informative at all, especially since web 2.0 means about a million different things to different people - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_2 . I would make a wager the 're-factoring' the original job post referred to involving removing any trace of smarty. And the 'rants' were some humor which is apparently a foreign concept. I'll strive to be more rigid and droll with the list moving forward and get my thoughts pre-approved by the resident 'technical forum' experts (yourself and neil). ----- Original Message ---- From: Jason Rexilius <ja...@ho...> To: Discussions of PHP-related topics among members of the Chicago PHP User's Group. <chi...@li...> Sent: Monday, March 17, 2008 12:44:17 PM Subject: Re: [chiPHPug-discuss] Threadless/Skinnycorp is hiring a couple PHP peeps Using web2.0 in any form other than a joke is bad. Having never used smarty I think it would be interesting to hear about some of its shortcomings or benefits. Is this thread useful at all? My statement was rather vague, I think Smarty has a place somewhere, but I personally dislike templating in general :D And giving the fact that PHP does HTML already, It seems pretty natural to use it. Smarty is a templating language. A disciplined programmer with PHP would not need Smarty (et al) because they'd just keep their [bleep] organized. However, large-scale projects with junior coders may find that Smarty (et al) helps enforce the separation of business logic and presentation logic. Or not, if the coders are junior enough... :-) Smarty's one uniqe (afaik) feature is that it compiles itself out into PHP code, so removes the possibly slow string substitution of other templating systems. ymmv naiaa ianal On Mon, March 17, 2008 2:53 pm, Jason Rexilius wrote: > Thanks matt.. That statement is so vague and biased that I had to debate for some time whether it is worth responding to. Using web2.0 in any form other than a joke is bad. And last I checked this was a technical forum. Adding some specific reasons why Smarty sucks might have value. Vague rants about something just sucking with nothing to back it up doesn't add value. Having never used smarty I think it would be interesting to hear about some of its shortcomings or benefits. And let me close by saying that web2.0 sucks.. ;-) Ryan Guthrie wrote: > That statement is so vague and biased that I had to debate for some > time whether it is worth responding to. No, for "Web 2.0" to suck, it would have to be far more concrete and explicitly defined than it, in fact, is. Web 2.0 is *bogus*. I'd also like to hear factual data about Smarty. I live in Java (and a little python or ruby) and templating is incredibly valuable. In my (crappy) php I wrote it didn't have templates but after looking at Smarty, I really think it would have benefited from Smarty. Is it a bad templating solution? Is templating in and of itself disliked? -jaw On Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 10:44 AM, Jason Rexilius <ja...@ho...> wrote: > Using web2.0 in any form other than a joke is bad. > > And last I checked this was a technical forum.
