When I try to connect to my VMware Workstation machine running on a Windows box, Chicken writes,

Connection Terminated
The remote server only allows Apple Remote Desktop clients to connect. Please change the settings on the server to allow VNC viewers to control the screen.

Clearly, that's wrong :) Also, I cannot access this server via the built-in Screen Sharing app, since it has no name or password, and that Einsteinian app can't connect to such a server. The RealVNC client connects fine, but the keyboard layout is broken, which is why I was looking for an alternative client in the first place.

Cheers :)

Why do you think that the error message is wrong? By default, Apple systems do not allow standard VNC clients to connect. (The RealVNC viewer may implement the non-standard Apple protocol.) You have to explicitely enable access for VNC clients on the Mac, as documented here on the Apple website:

    https://support.apple.com/guide/remote-desktop/set-up-a-computer-running-vnc-software-apdbed09830/mac

    That website says:

      1. On the client computer, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Sharing, then select Remote Management in the list at the left.

    2. Click Computer Settings, then select VNC viewers may control screen with password.”

    3. Enter a VNC password, then click OK.

I was able to connect with chicken without issues after following these instructions.

As per the first sentence in my post, "When I try to connect to my VMware Workstation machine running on a Windows box."

Either way, it is of no consequence, I'm not using Chicken. Can't remember what other software I used, but I just picked another one that worked.

Oh, I see. Sorry for the confusion, I misread it.
