[Chessx-users] stockfish issues

I know this has been asked before but: is there an easy way to get stockfish to work with chessx on a mac?
Adding it through preferences doesn't work - starting 'analysis' then simply opens stockfish outside chessx.  From what i understand that's to do with the version of stockfish one gets from the app store.  I've read about installing stockfish via homebrew, and about compiling it from source code, but these options require a level of knowledge i don't have.  Are there any other options to get this working?
