Just some general points... I am keen to help out with the chessx development, a native Linux with features to rival scid vs pc would be excellent. I have found that running the wine versions of both chessx and scid vs pc appear to work fine on Ubuntu 14.10. The chessx compiled version I made to run natively has menus that come and go at the top of the application (the file, edit, view,....menus are not behaving correctly). So I'm wondering how well tested the Qt version is, and can I help out on this with testing to start with. Also be keen to hear anyone's comparison of chessx and scid vs pc. Thanks Dave On 2 December 2014 at 14:44, David Herring <da...@ne...> wrote: > Maybe it's my compile of chessx, but I cannot seem to get it to start > playing through moves to do the analyzing. > > The +/- score is in pawns which side stands better at any position, so > nice to see when this changes and by how much throughout game. Maybe it's my compile of chessx, but I cannot seem to get it to start playing through moves to do the analyzing. The +/- score is in pawns which side stands better at any position, so nice to see when this changes and by how much throughout game. Some analysis allows you to select new lines that only change this score by a given threshold, i.e lines that make a difference. The teaser is great, thanks for update. I guess the goal is SCID vs PC FICS functionality. Just started using Chessx - very excited to be able to look over my games. Three quick questions:- 1/ The auto analysis - how do you make it step through moves to analyse the whole game. 2/ How do you remove the analysis from the game, so you can redo it with a longer time interval. 3/ How do you see the +/1 score for each position as you step through a game. Thanks in advance for any help on using this, Dave 1/ How do I remove the Chessx compiled on Ubuntu: version 1.2.2.0 UNIX64 Qt5.2.1 -- David Herring |

This allows the removal of all variations - great. Still struggling to get it to analyse a whole game. Also - see the FICS in preferences - how do you start a FICS game ? Much to lean...will get there, Thanks again Dave -- David Herring |

Yes there is. Just create a duplicate of the application and run them both. Hi, Thank your for replying. The indentation is not useful in the chessx example. For example, the "(4" is flush left after a bunch of deep variations (and for no clear reason). In the ChessBase example, one can follow where one is the variations by the indent level (also by font type, but that is less important). The other issue is that it looks like the chessx mailing list silently deleted your message, at least the online archive did here: http://sourceforge.net/p/chessx/mailman/chessx-users/ . This is why I did not try to post a screenshot. Do you know a way around this? On Thu, Oct 16, 2014 at 6:58 AM, James Coons <ja...@co...> wrote: > > I don’t see the problem. Is there a way either to run two copies of chessX or to have two position windows open at the same time? I would like to be able to compare similar positions, one in one window (with associated moves) and the other in a second window (with associated moves). I am on a Mac. |

PGN file variations still do not show up correctly on my Mac, chessX version 1.2 To see the problem, just try to view any PGN file with variations a few levels deep. For example, ChessBase published the results of the recent ARVES Isenegger tournament here: http://en.chessbase.com/post/isenegger-memorial-study-tourney . The pgn file for the Aberman study, the second study on the page, does not display correctly. (There is a "download PGN" link to that study at the bottom of the study, but I cannot paste the link.) Can someone please either fix the problem or explain how to work around it? I have not found any setting that fixes this. Also, am I posting in the wrong mailing list here or something? I am confused about why there has been no acknowledgment to my recent messages about this issue. [I posted about this back in July, was told the problem would be fixed.] On Fri, Jul 18, 2014 at 10:09 AM, ChessX <jen...@gm...> wrote: > > The display of variations will be fixed in version 1.2.0. I'll put that into a change request, as it is not entirely easy, I will add a rough sketch what needs to be done. The first steps on the way will be in the upcoming release, where databases and views are coupled more tightly. Each database has only one active game and each board is associated to one database. So yes, you can open a second or more boards and assign different games to them, but each of these games has to be from a different database to make use of this feature. I have uploaded a bugfix release to the sourceforge. There was a nasty crash upon saving unsaved work, which of course lead to a loss of data. Kind regards, Jens List of Changes: - Bugfix: Entering a rook move or 0-0 did not work via keyboard - Bugfix: Plycount wrong saving a game from the non-current database - Bugfix: Crash saving a database upon closing chessx if database was not current DB - Bugfix: Enter-Key did not terminate entering a nag - Bugfix: Occasionally random move would get highlighted - Bugfix: Searching for Rounds and Moves did not work - Bugfix: Searching for ranges did not include limits - Bugfix: UCI Options containing a '.' were parsed incorrectly - Bugfix: Entering half-ply count was limited to 99 moves (thx to Niklas) - Bugfix: Retracing a game would fail at move one - Bugfix: Retracing a game beyond a move with variations would leave invisible variations - Bugfix: Pasting PGN into new game did not set modified flag - Bugfix: Pasting FEN into new game did not create new game - Bugfix: Changes to square and arrow annotations in annotation dialog are not painted immediately - New feature: CR#141 Edit game details - New feature: CR#140 Remember maximize state (and full-screen state) - New feature: Arrow as current move hint - New feature: Menu entry to clear clipboard database - New feature: Sorting of game list by clicking header (for databases<=4K) - New feature: Multi-Selection in the game list - Enhanced: Speed up polyglot book building - Changed: F3/F4 now load previous / next game |

Polyglot bin files load really quickly, although it takes forever to generate them and they have rather limited information available. Maybe one could add and display additional fields to polyglot files at the expense of being non-standard so they could display the same information that pgn based trees do. Are there any plans to speed up the slow load of the tree on big databases? Scid loads million game pgns very quickly in tree mode but chessx is unusable here. This makes large reference database usability a current problem for chessx which is a huge issue for a chess database program to have. Jeff |

Hi all, I am trying to compile version 1.1.0 on ubuntu 14.04 laptop. I have Qt5.3. I find so many error in compilation that I start wondering if the tar.gz uploaded in the web-site is the right one! First, the make process couldn't find the file chessx_de.qm in the directory /i18n. I looked at it and there is no such file, but chessx_de.ts, so I modified the file resource.h to find that. Then I started again the compilation, but this time I receive the following error In file included from src/quazip/quazip.h:31:0, from src/gui/mainwindow.cpp:38: src/quazip/zip.h:56:18: fatal error: zlib.h: No such file or directory #include <zlib.h> ^ compilation terminated. make: *** [obj_rel/mainwindow.o] Error 1 and, in fact, I looked for that file through all the src but it's not anywhere. Could you please give me some hints? Best |

Once I have Version 1.2.0 done, I want to design a Model-View architecture around the Game class, this would allow us more sophisticated views than HTML. The way we are currently generating and using HTML will hinder any systematic progress, in addition, the generic output class makes maintenance hard. Maybe a feature to temporarily hide variations without actually deleting them would be useful. The display of variations will be fixed in version 1.2.0. The fix is already in the svn repository, so you can build your own update.
