Dear Chessx Users, I just pushed a version 1.6.4 fixing a bug which only appears under Qt6 - engine options were not stored correctly. As only Mc OS binaries use Qt6, I only updated the Mac Installer. Jens |

Dear users and developers, I have updated the setup files for Windows and Mac OS to 1.6.2 This is mainly an update for finally fixing the annoying UTF8 issues that had come up. But there are a number of new features like loading tournament files from lichess. I will now start to merge all new features from pull requests so new features should be coming up soon. Thanks for your patience and thanks for all the help I got with this update! Some notes: For Mac OS I used Qt 6 (Qt 6.5.3) - if you want to compile ChessX yourself and you want to use a newer release of Qt: read the notes here: https://sourceforge.net/p/chessx/wiki/ChessX%20and%20Qt6/ The Windows version is still on Qt5 - if you are patient enough to fiddle out all the SSL and zlib issues you could probably switch to Qt6. I tested ChessX on Ubuntu 22.04 with Qt5 - you could probably transition to Qt6 - but same issues will arise as with Windows. For a note on SSL take a look under https://sourceforge.net/p/chessx/wiki/ChessX%20and%20Linux/ The bugs inside Qt > 6.5.3, 6.6, 6.7 also apply to Windows and Linux - prefer Qt 6.5.3. If you find any issues in ChessX, give me a note! Have fun! Jens |

Dear friends, I am running Linux Mint 21.2, QMake version 3.1, using Qt version 5.15.3 in /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu. Compilation finishes with this error: src/dialogs/preferences.cpp: In member function ‘void PreferencesDialog::restoreSettings()’: src/dialogs/preferences.cpp:671:46: error: ‘availableVoices’ is not a member of ‘ChessXSettings’ 671 | QStringList voiceNames = ChessXSettings::availableVoices(lang); | ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ make: *** [Makefile:4040:obj_rel/preferences.o] I tried to fix it, but without success. I think that I have all necessary Qt modules installed. Please help me to solve it. Thanks. Vlasta |

Hello Brian, which tags should be filled in automatically? Usually there should be a dialog upon saving asking for the tags and they should end up in the file afterwards. I have not seen any issues there. And can you make me a screenshot of the preferences issue. I know that Windows has a lot of issues displaying icons correctly on certain systems where the DPI settings are not standard, but I heard, that some Laptops cause trouble. This is not a problem on Mac OS and on proper Linux systems. Hi Jens, In the past when I wanted to add a game to my database the tags were automatically filled in when I saved it. Now the fields are blank. Am I missing something? 1.4.6.0 Ubuntu 20,04 1.5.6 Win7/10 Haven't played much with 1.5.8 in Windows yet as I'm having trouble with the preferences window buttons being off screen with no way to resize it... Thanks, Brian |

Thank you for the new release! Could you please consider merging the following pull requests? https://github.com/Isarhamster/chessx/pull/61 https://github.com/Isarhamster/chessx/pull/63 They are needed so that ChessX can be packaged properly in Fedora Linux (and potentially other Linux distributions). Currently I apply them as patches on Fedora side, but it would make the maintenance easier if they are included upstream in future releases. Also, all of the files in the 1.5.8 tarball [2] have the executable bit set, which is wrong - only executable files (i.e. binaries and text files with shebangs) and directories should have the bit set. Would it be possible to fix this in the future releases? The files in the git repo have the permission bits set correctly. Cheers, Ondrej [1] https://getfedora.org/ [2] https://downloads.sourceforge.net/chessx/chessx-1.5.8.tgz |

Dear ChessX Users, there are new installers available on https://sourceforge.net/projects/chessx/ Important fixes contain the broken 7-men tablebase. My favourite new feature: the Lichess Master Database as opening tree - all the most important lines always at your fingertips. If you find any issues or if you have any questions - just send a message to the list and I will try to clarify or fix them. Kind regards Jens |

The engines do not generate this kind of information. It would be up to the user or the user interface to generate this kind of annotation. The only thing the engines output is the current evaluation of the position. If this evaluation rises or drops, it might be an indication of an excellent move or a blunder. But it’s hard to tell the difference between the two of them as a rise from one side is also a drop seen from the other player. > Am 11.12.2022 um 12:26 schrieb Emiya Shirou <emi...@gm...>: > > Hello, I have a problem with chessx it's a fantastic program it has everything I was looking for but I have a problem when the engine analyzes a game it doesn't put comments like !, ??, ? etc on the moves. I know this has been asked before but: is there an easy way to get stockfish to work with chessx on a mac? Adding it through preferences doesn't work - starting 'analysis' then simply opens stockfish outside chessx. From what i understand that's to do with the version of stockfish one gets from the app store. I've read about installing stockfish via homebrew, and about compiling it from source code, but these options require a level of knowledge i don't have. Are there any other options to get this working? Thanks. |

I am having difficulty comprehending what the issue is with downloading the databases. I can download pgn database (i.e. caissabase) but using the "web favorites" (twic$1g.zip) and the small and large database included with ChessX leads to a dead end. (unable to access at this time.) Please keep me informed. I really am trying to do what I can do and am grateful for all the work you have already put in this far. I am doubtful if I can provide any significant assistance myself. I'm trying. |

Dear Sirs: I am unable to download chess databases (i.e. "Web Favorite" and sample database both large and small). This problem seems to be systemic. As an aside, I am also interested in contributing to chess and programming. I am minimally oriented with computers. Please reply. I thank you in advance. Stan Wojnowski |

Hi, I've just installed an admittedly old version of the application (1.4.6.0) via a linux package manager (apt). I open a database, select the game, select Game Text tab, then I select the last move. In response, ChessX draws a lavender arrow from a piece to an empty square. I'm assuming this is a hint. In an attempt to disable this feature (which seems to be mentioned in the release notes for version 1.2.2) I open preferences and select "No hints in training mode" on the board tab. Then I choose training mode->play both sides. The arrow persists. What am I doing wrong, save using an old version of the application? Suhr |

Hi, I recently started using chessx and used the FICS interface to login as my FICS user and play a game. Nearly everything worked great; however, the time clocks next to the board do not change, they just remain at the maximum value for each player. Do I perhaps have a setting wrong somewhere?
