Several text editors with code markup functionality (such as kwrite) will tint the text between parenthesis, brackets, and the like, when the cursor is between two. So you know where a function begins and where it ends (or if it's "leaking" by not being properly closed) at a glance.
Something like that would be very helpful on the moves & variations pane. That would make so much easier to avoid accidentally removing the variation we want to keep when we're cleaning up, after finding one we particularly like after dozens of failed attempts.
