I installed version 1.6.6.0 after uninstalling the previous version and no database can be opened. There is no error message, the application simply does not react.
The only way around it seems to be dragging the PGN on to the Database widget. The the whole database (including, games, players, events etc.) is displayed correctly... but only until the application is closed. The paths are saved correctly in the preferences, but t no avail.
I also tried to delete the .INI file to reset all preference but nothing changes and the database can only be opened via drag and drop.

I tested 1.6.6 on a Windows 11 24H2 so I am not expection issues on 25H2. And I can open arbitrary PGN databases. Can you confirm that you do not see something like this on the Status Bar (right click, then History)?
I can confirm I do no see that.
The initial situation is that I need to open a database, so I try to open it (see screenshot try-open.jpg) and nothing happens. If I try from the menu File > Open, it does not react either.
If I drag and drop the PGN file, the database is imported correctly (see screenshot drag-drop.jpg). Then I set it to be opened at startup (see screenshot active.jpg) but when I relaucnh ChessX, the name of the database is the widget but it looks like it is empty (see screenshot empty.jpg).
If I don't set the option to be open at startup the outcome is exactly the same. I also try to delete the INI file again, to reset the preferences from scratch but the problem persists. Reinstalling the whole thing also does not resolve the problem.
Thanks in advance for your time.
I have exactly the same issue with windows 11 pro. I get the message "file not found", even when I choose the pgn file from "Open".

That small D:\ was a hint - I can see the bug now as well and will fix it in the next few days. I'm not working with Windows-style paths at all on my computer which is why I did not see this error (all my URLs are something like //mac/Home/Documents/...)
Not sure if this is related, but... I installed Fedora 43's chessx (I know it'sa couple patch levels behind) and the first time I ran it, it said it was downloading some database (not the lichess/chess/.com/fics, something else) and it failed. Getting a lot of this:
