I am just developing a new version of the application and I am facing a similar problem with some pdf books.
I think the problem is that my program does not include some libraries that might be important to render some kind of images.
I will try to include them in the new version of the application (if their license is not very restrictive).
The following issue you mention: You cannot see the pieces on the board, is more strange.
I have no idea of what may be happening.
If you agree, we can have an skype call and see what can be happening.
Another point is that the image you shared to show how the images are missing, say that you are using a book with chess figure notation.
Currently the application is not prepared to work with that kind of notation (indeed the application can only extract games from books with algebraic notation).
