Please, could you check the latest version of the application? (It is still in progress, but I think that the gist might work. In addition I have added the missing libraries, so you can try if that fixes the problem). I am just developing a new version of the application and I am facing a similar problem with some pdf books. I think the problem is that my program does not include some libraries that might be important to render some kind of images. I will try to include them in the new version of the application (if their license is not very restrictive). The following issue you mention: You cannot see the pieces on the board, is more strange.
