Hi all,

I've moved this project to google code. I love sourceforge but it's too freakin complicated here. I will no longer upload files here, so please head to

Chessnuts v0.9b released!

Hi all,

This release cleans up the GUI a bit and fixes some minor bugs. There is still one minor bug to chase down and fix. Once I can do this (here's hoping I can) I will slap a v1.0 on this thing! Weeeee.

The goal of this program is to provide an intuitive virtual chess table for friendly play across the internet. No rules will be hard-coded, so you can play any variations you please.

Obviously this is not for tournaments. Just like a real chess board, if your opponent goes to the bathroom you can move all his pieces around and run down his clock. Currently I have no plans to simulate the nervous "Oh, you're back. Shall we continue?" upon your opponent's return. ... read more

chessnuts version 0.82b released!

Testing has gone well with the clock. With most of the important features implemented, I am taking some time to clean a few things up, starting with the rather odd piece color scheme. The default colors for pieces/cursors has changed, and added option to change them as you see fit. I made a few other visual enhancements/fixes, most notably, the pawns are symmetric, and floaty pieces are now translucent.... read more

chessnuts version 0.81b released! Now with clocks!

Chessnuts now has chess clocks that can be toggled via the buttons or by pressing space. There is a lot of cleanup and more small features I would like to add, but this is probably the last MAJOR change to chessnuts, aside from adding bughouse (a fanciful dream, no?). When it has been tested thoroughly, I will slap a 1.0 sticker on it.

testing going well

My brother and I played for an hour with the floaties on and everything. I highly recommend enabling them, and using the new method of sending ("New Update Method" and "Floaties Enabled" check boxes are in the "Options").

Enjoy!

chessnuts version 0.73b released!

The goal of chessnuts is to provide an intuitive virtual chess table for friendly play across the internet. No rules will be hard-coded, so you can play any variations you please.

Chessnuts is fairly basic. It allows you to host a multiplayer session with up to 64 players, and will update everyone's board as pieces are moved around. It also includes a chat window and several different setup schemes including traditional, random, and Fischer random (chess960), with even, odd, or uncorrelated symmetry. ... read more

chessnuts version 0.72b released

In this release I added a frames per second counter, and overhauled how the drawing is handled. Drawing is now controlled only by a timer event, rather than mouse events, so the fps can never exceed 100. Hopefully this will fix the funny network business.

chessnuts version 0.71b released

This is a very minor release. For some reason, over the internet only (not on my LAN), the floaties cause a network freeze up at any floaty refresh rate, even 1/2 a second! I've disabled floaties by default now, and added the word "experimental" next to the check box. Hopefully this will give new users a more trouble-free experience.

chessnuts version 0.61b released!

Chessnuts is a virtual online multiplayer chess table for friendly play across the internet. No rules will be hard-coded, so you can play any variations you please. Has a chat window and supports standard, random, Fischer random (chess960) and more.

In this release, the network connection and client data code were overhauled. Aside from looking more elegant, it also fixes a lot of bugs.

More importantly, now whenever you drag a piece around, everyone else on the server can see it, which makes the game flow FAR easier to follow. (I also fixed that annoying behavior where you lose the piece you're holding whenever someone picks one up. I coded that behavior on purpose at one point. Not sure why.)... read more

Chessnuts is a virtual online chess table for friendly play across the internet. No rules will be hard-coded, so you can play any variations you please. Has a chat window and supports standard, random, Fischer random (chess960) and more. It uses 2d OpenGL to smoothly render the board and wxWidgets for the GUI.

I originally programmed this so I could play across the internet with my brother and father. I hope others enjoy it as well! See http://jack.sankey.googlepages.com/chess for more details. ... read more
