#11 telnet connection glitches

Windows XP telnet client in particular does not echo
back input.

UNIX client (OS X telnet) sometimes puts successive
prompts on same line.

It's conceivable that this quirk might cause some
interoperability problems with GUI clients.

The observations are similar to what I have seen with
very old telnet servers, and may have a similar cause.
Perhaps the network code needs some
attention/modernisation.
