To reproduce: click a message title in the popup window

Expected: message should expand, letting user read the text of the email

Observed: a 404 error is given

Presumably, Gmail has changed something on their end that requires a fix in checkgmail

Your assertion on the home page that the 404 full text error is now fixed is very premature. I run Checkgmail on 4 different distros, all fully updated (1.14pre2-svn) and I get the 404 error on every one of them. Not only that but it has also lost the ability to blend in with the task bar having a white background whatever colour you choose under preferences.
