The 0.5 release of Chaos Shell has GNU Readline and History support (for commandline editing and history). It supports background tasks (stick an & at the end of the commandline) although there is a bug preventing a foreground task returning to the shell if a background process is running, which will be fixed before release 1.0

Chaos supports expansion of ~ to your home directory provided it is the first character on a commandline. Support for expansion regardless of location on line, and possibly expansion for other users homedirs (eg ~username/) will be aded before the 1.0 release.
