I'm storing some files on CD-R and DVD-R discs for permanent archives. I will store a checksum file for easy checking of the archives, to check for bad burn, damaged disc, or bit rot. Which hash format is best to use for this purpose.

Occasionally I share some of my files with friends on the internet through various methods. I'd like to pass along a hash code they can use to verify that the file I'm sending is exactly the file they receive. Which has format is best to use in this scenario?

I have previously used various implementations of md5sum on Windows and Linux, and I have been using Slavasoft's free FSum program on Windows for some time now. I must say, cfv is the best program of this kind I've ever encountered. Thank you for it.
      :)

    TIA

md5 is the best option at my opinion. sfv is also a good option for local use, but its somewhat vulnerable (nowadays) at attacks for online use.

I agree that cfv rules!!! ;-)

      Greets!!!
      Giorgos. :-)
