In this game it is easy to break something, notably for non-experts. I think we should also have Pat's opinion about all this, since he seems to be professionally associated with Linux packaging and the like.
Incidentally, do we have Chris' approval to dismantle the whole traditional Celestia building system?

In general, once we have singled out a really satisfactory building & installing  scheme it is fine with me to get rid of automake and friends that I never liked very much.
