Hello all,

I know this is a sensitive topic and many people consider it
sacrilegious. If this has already been discussed here and decided upon,
please let me know.

I have just asked two questions on this list so far. And, all the
replies for the two questions have come as personal email. These replies
should have come to the list so that it gets archived and is available
for others to find when they google.

Can we please have the 'reply-to' header munged by mailman to point to
this list?

I don't. :-)

Back in the day, it was considered rude to post to mailing lists without
being subscribed, so usually there was a forced 'reply-to' header to the
list. It seems those days are mostly gone, though, and I don't think
this is something to get upset about.

Those replies went to you as well as to the list. The usual thing when
replying to mails in mailing lists is to use a wide reply ("Reply
All"). This implies that the answer will go to all people involved in
the current thread as well as to the list itself. Of course, if people
are subscribed, they will receive the reply twice, but a good mail
reader should be able to suppress duplicates, so it doesn't really
matter.

Still, if you don't want to receive mails personally because you are
subscribed to the list, you can indicate this by setting the
Mail-Followup-To header:

Be prepared though that not all mail clients respect this setting (it's
never been properly standardized).

I think most listserv's today (SF.net's included) actually don't allow
you to post without being subscribed and e-mail verified, due to spam.
They do allow you however to turn off receiving list messages after
subscribing.

They go through moderator approval.

I used to only reply to the list (and still think this is The Right
Thing), but changed to 'wide reply' because of herd instinct.

Hi Joe,

I received all my replies from you back via the mailing list.  The 
messages should be sent to you, and to the list both.

The reason to not force a reply to is sometimes people post who are not 
on the mailing list, and then they would never get any replies to their 
email.
