Hello,

I have lent a BTC BCE621E (an ide-scsi CD-RW) from a
friend. Installed, working well as a cd-rom and CD
drive, etc. As soon as I attempt to read from it using
cdrdao, I get all kinds of SCSI errors. After that has
happened, the device is "confused" and won't respond
normally to anything (not even detection by cdrecord
-scanbus, which produces a "garbage" entry for the
drive then) until a reset. I also believe that writing
wouldn't work; I only once came to it, and it also got
me errors. On a sidenote, trying to read from the CD
drive slows down the system heavily, with almost all
CPU time being consumed as "system" time.

The weird part is that `cdrecord -scanbus` detects my
ide-scsi BCE621E as:

Cdrecord 1.10 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C)
1995-2001 Jörg Schilling
Linux sg driver version: 3.1.19
Using libscg version 'schily-0.5'
scsibus0:
0,0,0 0) 'OTI-975 ' 'SOCRATES ' '2.07' Removable CD-ROM

That's right, is sees a completely different drive!
dmesg gives the same answer. But at least the LABEL
says it's a BCE621E! It gets more silly once you note
that the CD-Writing HOWTO claims the OTI-975 CDRW
'Socrates' to be supported AS WELL as the BCE...

Anyway, cdrdao doesn't recognize the drive, I try each
and every driver and I get errors at each one of them,
mostly as described in the first paragraph.

My normal CD player is a teac (IIRC, it's unplugged now
for testing purposes); this one didn't work wel with
1.1.3 but got recognized in 1.1.5 and worked well. Alas
I can't burn with a normal CD player, only read.

For the sake of completeness, here's some cdrdao output
(just a cut from the stream of errors). If you need any
more info, please mail me, <StefanRieken@SoftHome.net>.
Thanks in advance.

(dpkg) versions of software used currently (after upgrade):

cdrdao 1.1.5-2
cdrecord 1.10-1
kernel 2.4.7

(All recompiled from the debian packages, kernel first,
then cdrecord, then cdrdao)

small misc. excerpt error output (this here from 1.1.3):
