Checking the server status blocks all user interaction. Not a major problem
if the server is responsive, but makes it painful to get the "set server"
dialogue up on initial install (unless you happen to have a server running
on the default URL), because it has to wait for a timeout before accepting
user input.

Server refreshes should be done on a separate thread.
