Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development. With many thanks for your participation, Benno Luthiger PS: The results of the survey will be published under http://www.isu.unizh.ch/fuehrung/blprojects/FASD/. We have set up the mailing list fa...@we... for this study. Please see http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/mailinglist_en.html for registration to this mailing list. _______________________________________________________________________ Benno Luthiger Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich 8092 Zurich Mail: benno.luthiger(at)id.ethz.ch _______________________________________________________________________ |

Dear all, I hope you are getting into the swing of the new term. At GCI we have had a very busy few months, preparing for and then attending the annual U.N. Climate Conference in Italy. I am back in the office now and looking forward to picking up the Java Climate Project with you and bringing it to completion. Most of you are based at Warwick and while timetables may have become busier for some, with the arrival of the new term, I know there are others who are keen and have time to get stuck into the project. I would like to arrange a meeting at Warwick in the next few weeks, I will be phoning around to see what dates suit everyone the best. I suggest that we try and make it a Friday after lectures. Let me know by email if you have any particular preferences. I am also making inquiries with my old professor in Engineering about giving an open talk on climate change talk earlier on the same day. I will be in touch with you individually and look forward to seeing you soon, Yours Sincerely, Tim --- __________________________ Global Commons Institute (GCI) **COP-9 Mobile No:- 00 44 7941 751929** 37 Ravenswood Road LONDON E17 9LY UK Ph: 00 44 (0)208 520 4742 Fax: 00 44 (0)870 130 0042 ti...@gc... www.gci.org.uk GCN: www.topica.com/lists/GC...@ig.../read ____________________________________________________________ Get advanced SPAM filtering on Webmail or POP Mail ... Dear All, Thank you to those of you who came to the arts centre last Friday. The Conference work dictates that I will not be able to meet with you before Christmas, but I would like to meet in Warwick with you all in the new term. I suggest that we meet at the Arts Centre at 6pm on Friday of the first week of Term. Please let me know if this will work for you. I will send out a reminder nearer the time. Many Thanks and Happy Christmas. Pedro and Alexias, and the rest of the group. My sincere appologies for missing our Friday meeting. Thank you for coming. I had remembered it in error as this Tuesday. I will phone round on Monday to see if Tuesday works for many of you. If so we should go ahead with that. Otherwise I will be in touch after Christmas to arrange a date at the start of the new term. I am consciouse that one aspect that may have attracted some of you to the project was the prospect of attending the UN Climate Conference in Milan. This starts on the 1st of December and runs for two weeks. Although we don't have the new Java model. If any of you are interested and can afford the time and travel/accomodation money you are welcome to join me and my coleagues for part or all of the meeting. With the completion of the CCOptionsII model in mind, there will be another UN meeting next year. It will be at about the same time and it will be in Brazil (Home from home Pedro) Thank you all for your continued interest. Project members, Thank you for your feedback on dates for our meeting. Having initially suggested this week or next, my schedule dictates that Friday evening in three weeks time is the first good opportunity to come up to Warwick. 6pm Friday 21st November Upstairs in the Arts Centre. Please mark this in your diaries. If it clashes with prior arrangements please get back to me with details of your availability. Project members, My apologies for being out of touch with many of you for so long. Thank you again for your interest in the project, and for your patience. I appreciate your willingness to contribute and for the contributions that many of you have made. I am conscious as I am sure you are that the project has been slow to progress. This is essentially because I have not been able to give out specific project tasks to you all. As the designer of the project, I took it upon myself to manage the project too. This I can see is problematic. Not being a programmer, I am not able to follow the progress of the code or to define task boundaries from a programmers perspective. This is a solvable problem and will, I believe, be remedied by appointing a Project Manager who can code. We are fast approaching the end of October now, and the UN climate change conference will start soon after on the 1st of December. My current thinking is that it is unlikely we will complete the project in time for this event. This is sad but by no means the end of the world. The work that has been started will be announced at the conference and we will be gathering contact details of delegates who would like to receive notification of the completed model. The model will be need for many years to come is still vital for us to deliver. Over the last few months, my time has been increasingly diverted to other preparations for the conference. My input will be even thinner for the remainder of this year, before I pick up the project afresh in the new year. I am keen that we hold onto the gains we have made, both in terms of the planning and programming work you have already done, and in the interest from many of you that I have yet to put to good use. Most of you are based at Warwick University and there are a number who I have yet to meet. I would like to arrange a meeting later this week or early next at Warwick. This will give us all an opportunity to meet and to recap on where the project is at. My primary aim for the meeting however is for us to identify a Project Manager. This person will be a programmer who can work with me to identify and allocate tasks to the team. I will need to work closely with them to convey what the end user needs. The Project Manager will follow the progress of the code, contribute themselves assist in giving feedback and coordinating the work of the team. I am aware that you are all busy people and that this post will occupy a good deal of your time. However I also think that the project can be concluded quite swiftly when our sizeable team of programmers are given clear instructions what to do. I suggest one of the following meeting times. Please get back to me with your availability for each of these. - This Friday lunchtime/afternoon - Next Monday morning - Next Tuesday Evening - Other (please suggest what works for you) Would you also consider the task of Project Manager. If you are interested or want to know more please let me know by email. I am also conscious that some of you may still be interested in attending the climate conference and we can talk about that in more detail at the meeting. Finally If you think that this work could be integrated into the tasks or projects that your course requires, please let me know. I would be happy to make your contributions formally know to the University. Many Thanks, I look forward to seeing many of you soon. Dan, Pedro and the Group, A few notes on the country tree, - Dan - In place of .cc, can we use .c&c as the file extension. I see that .b&w already exists for Mono binary screen image (not so important, but would be nice) - Pedro - good that the countries can only be moved not copied or pasted. Multiple copies of countries is not good. If a country was there twice (and its parent region folders were open) then it would be drawn twice on the graphs. this we don't want. - Pedro - <<- Can only rename Regions (I guess we shouldn't allow renaming countries either, right?)>> Yes, that's best. - Pedro - << Should the tree allow multiple nodes to be selected and dragged? continuing where I left off..
// Using the predicted CO2, get the smoothed temperature model.
CCSmoothedTemp cct =3D new CCSmoothedTemp(ds2, smoothedco2concs);
The problem here is that I have only included data from 1975 in global.csv =
and t-25 worth of data is needed.
CCDataSet ds3 =3D cct.model(2000, 2200, 1);
I'll make up some code when I get chance, but I haven't got my computer =
set up at home yet so I wont be able to test it or anything.

Dan, Agree with you. XML seems very suitable for the task.. Are you implementing that now? I can prob. have a look into it if you want. Just going to commit a fixed version of the tree: -- fixed the bugs pointed out -- popup when moving is unecessasy so took it out. All drag-n-drop actions represent a move ( no copies , although I though it could be useful to have many copies of the same country in different folders.) -- Can only rename Regions (I guess we shouldn't allow renaming countries either, right?) -- Cannot delete the entire world ;p Just added the TreeExpansionListener which is notified after any node is expanded or collapsed. I am considering having it calling a method in GUI to deal with it ( should have a static getInstance() method in the GUI to return a GUI object?), what do you think? How we are updating the graph? Would a GraphManager or similar class be useful? Let me know about any faults in the tree. --pedro On Tuesday 16 September 2003 5:01 pm, Daniel White wrote: > We need scenarios to load into the tree, would the easiest way to do this > be saving as XML? This email is really to Peter but I thought I'd post to the list to keep
everyone informed.
Hi Peter,
I've been looking at the code you did to test the graphing and I've copied
it into a class for creating the inner frame holding a 'global temperature
rise' graph. I've tried to comment the code so I don't forget what it's
doing but there is some stuff I'm not sure about or don't understand at
all... Here is what I have written:
private void createGraph() {
// loads global CO2 data from the CSV file
CCDataSet pastworldco2 = new CCDataSet("co2", ".GLOBAL");
// revision point with 450 ppmv, start year of 2000, convergence year of
// 2040 and population cutoff of 2025
CCRevisionPoint revision = new CCRevisionPoint(450, 2000, 2040, 2025);
// presumably a model for the contraction using the given revision
CCContraction CCContraction1 = new CCContraction(pastworldco2,
revision);
// get the data from 1900 to 2200 at intervals of every two years.
CCDataSet ds = CCContraction1.model(1900, 2200, 2);
// graphing stuff
TimeSeriesCollection dataset = new TimeSeriesCollection();
// what is this? If it is co2 concentrations then what is the GLOBAL co2
stuff?
CCDataSet co2concs = new CCDataSet("global", "co2concs");
// what does the smoothed add?
CCDataSet smoothedco2concs = new CCDataSet("global",
"smoothedco2concs");
CCCo2Concentrations co2conc = new CCCo2Concentrations(co2concs, ds,
revision);
// CO2 concentrations from 1900 to 2200?
CCDataSet ds2 = co2conc.model(1900, 2200, 1);
// Using the predicted CO2, get the smoothed temperature model.
CCSmoothedTemp cct = new CCSmoothedTemp(ds2, smoothedco2concs);
// why does it all go so wonky if i set the temperature back to 1900?
// do we have any data on temperature rises in the past?
CCDataSet ds3 = cct.model(2000, 2200, 1);
TimeSeries s2 = ds3.toTimeSeries("Global Temperature Rise");
dataset.addSeries(s2);
dataset.setDomainIsPointsInTime(true);
dataset.setPosition(TimeSeriesCollection.MIDDLE);
JFreeChart chart = createChart(dataset,
"Predicted Global Temperate Rise");
ChartPanel chartPanel = new ChartPanel(chart);
chartPanel.setPreferredSize(new java.awt.Dimension(500, 270));
chartPanel.setMouseZoomable(true, false);
getContentPane().add(chartPanel);
}
If you could reply with some examples of how the control could alter the
graph and correct my comments above then that would be very useful...

Dan.

Dear all, I've redone the calculations that deduce concentrations and temperature from an emissions profile, based on a Hadley paper from last Nov as well as the IPCC 1994/5 publications that I used when I first did this exercise in 1998/9. I havent got time to stick the formulas into the XL version of ccoptions, and am now away for most of the next two weeks so am unlikely to do that before late Sept. The new formulas should be used instead of the ones I sent out before. They show a steeper temperature rise, and no longer use the concept of 1.5/2.5/4.5 degree sensitivity, which seems to have been quietly dropped as the GCM modellers have got much better. They should also be OK at least up to 750ppmv, as opposed to 650 before - there's still a need to check and maybe amend to make sure the results look reasonable for a business-as-usual case. The formulas can be found (i.a.) in cells T7 and H7 in the two sheets, which show the fit between my simple-model estimates, and the IPCC's and HAdley's assertions about the output of their models. Any suggestions for doing this better would be welcomed. Cheers Tony |
