Try the same disks using only the serial half of your XMP1541 cable, i.e.
configure cbm4linux to _not_ use the parallel cable. Does that help? Also,
try the same disks with The Star Commander, with the same settings, under
real DOS and Windows (if you have one on your machine! ;-) ). Does that
help?

You see, it might be the disks; the drive; the (parallel half of the)
cable; the transfer software; the transfer settings; the operating
system... ;-)
