Seems you don't have write permissions. As the stock cbm4linux code 
contains two different methods for accessing the parallel port we first 
have to find out which method you currently use. Please tell us the 
output of "uname -a" on your machine.

Good, this means the driver and the protocol work.

You do not give any "-t" parameter? This way, the system uses 
the IEC bus protocol, which is *very* slow. I would suggest using -ts1
or -ts2.

What is the output of "cbmctrl detect"?

What kind of drive do you use? Do you have any special ROM inside of
what? What is the output of "cbmctrl reset; cbmctrl status 8"?
