First of all, I'd just like to request that we use this mailing list for all emailed discussion of CanDo. Then it is logged somewhere else permanently and is organized. Plus, since Tom Hoffman is on this list, he can make interjections if ever it seems necessary, along with whoever else decides to join the list (like interested POV developers, etc.) The following are the user stories from last night's meeting. Before you go on reading it, I would just like to make a request that further user stories are somewhat more thoroughly explained a la schooltool developers. To be more specific, I'd like to see a statement of the problem, (the reason for changing something or adding a feature, etc.) and the suggested solution. In other words, something to give context to the user stories. This will serve the purpose of informing those who weren't at the meeting (me), and to keep a better record of user stories. For an example of what I'm talking about, see http://lists.schooltool.org/pipermail/schooltool/2005-July/001418.html about a quarter of the way down. Thanks, Paul Anyways, on with the actual User Stories... Paul, let me apologize for the cryptic nature of the user stories from last week. It took us a good three hours to come up with the list of nine you see, and there was a LOT of discussion about competencies, flexibility... in other words, the context you were seeking. We began with notes of the discussion, which I then boiled down to the user stories, which we all agreed upon. I dropped the notes, thinking they may confuse you, and wanting to give you clear direction as you progress. I know you tried to make the meeting but had connectivity issues. I can say that the meeting was invaluable, however, especially the opportunity to think as a group. I know you will be in CA the coming week, and I'll be coming late, at about 7:30pm. Maybe we can connect then. This being said, I'll add a few notes to the user stories. --Welsh Paul Carduner wrote: >First of all, I'd just like to request that we use this mailing list >for all emailed discussion of CanDo. Classes/sections include students, teachers, competencies, a grading system, and the capability to actually grade students (I like grade over evaluate; more straightforward). >2) Delete "NEW EVALUATION" and "MASS EVALUATION ADDER" > > NOTE: We talked about three ways to set-up competencies vis-a-vis a section. The first is to have competencies that the whole class will do. The second way is to have skillsets that subgroups of the class will do. The third way is to have each student do a different set of competencies. Elkner likes the third and the second, because it correlates to independent study. Welsh, and almost every other Career & Tech. Ed. Teacher in the state of Virginia will like way #1 -- that is, a class that is basically working on the same competency group. State law requires that a class have a defined competency group, and that 94% of the students in class complete 80% of them. So case #1, setting up a class with its competency group, is the most important case, and we should make the labeling clearly mark this path. In the future, I could see a nice multiple choice box for when instructors are setting-up classes, asking them how they want to do it: 1) comps. by section; 2) comps. by student subgroup; 3) or comps. a la carte. >3) Add "Edit Section" > find a way to neatly allow instructors to add competencies > and a grading scale to the section, which already has > instructors and students > > NOTE: Again, this marks the clear path to solve case #1. >4) When I log in as instructor and click CanDooToo, and then go into sections, > only show two boxes: > 1) section you are teaching (should show up in top) > list all sections I am teaching below > > 2) sections you are taking (should show up second) > list all sections I am taking below > > Get rid of all the other junk that currently shows up in there. > > NOTE: And for instructors, we want to see sections we are teaching first. In fact, no VA State instructor will be taking classes in the high schools in which they are teaching. But I can see how the flexibility is nice, but again, we have to make a clear, easy path to solve our main case, which is set-up and grade a section. >5) When I click on my section > I should go right to spreadsheet showing all students on left > and all comps as columns (showing comp number only) > should be able to enter grades here, as numbers, not comments > > NOTE: The intermediate interface here is not necessary. Again, we are giving WAY too much choice, and convoluting WAY too much the main problem, which is set-up a section, add students, add a competency group, choose a grading system, and then grade the section. As for show grade by number and not comment, the comments just make the chart way too big. We could always put a legend at the top of the spreadsheet (or the bottom), or show the comment on rollover. >6) At the end of each row of the spreadsheet, two calculations should appear: > 1) one score for percent competent, another for GPA (same as CanDo1) > > These scores are the reason for the season. They should tabulate as we go, and be clearly visible to students and instructors. This is what motivates teachers and students to push forwards with competency acquisition. The GPA is important for melding the comps. tracking system with the grading system, which will still be running right alongside this system (remember, we teach more than just competencies). >7) Can we make the default logon go into CanDoToo >--currently logins to calendar and requires several clicks to get back to CanDo > > NOTE: This is a little bit of a "nice-to-do", but it could end-up saving instructors literally hundreds of clicks. >8) We need to add back in several features from CanDo1 (see CanDo1 for >reference): > 1) links to curriculum at top of grade spreadsheet column > > NOTE: Remember, this is one of the crucial features that sets us apart. > 2) link to a view of competency by student > > NOTE: #2 should clearly show up-front the student's competency completion rate and GPA as soon as the student logs on. A nice integrated place to write overall info, such as, "this week, you need to compete comps. #7, 15 & 16, because they will be counted in your grade for the quarter). > 5) calculation of percentage of class that is competent > > NOTE: #5 is CRITICAL; this is THE piece of info. mandated by the state, along with a spit-out of the OFFICIAL COMPETENCY RECORD of each student (a report I know you also need to add). >9) We need a student logon and student view of their competencies > student should be able to create evidence links in this view > > NOTE: Again, it's critical that students see they % Completion Rate and GPA for the comps. as soon as they log on. Hope this all helps. Feel free to e-mail me in the interim. And I'll be there this Thursday at 7:30pm EST. I'm in Richmond at a conference Tues - Thurs afternoon. --Welsh > >------------------------------------------------------- >SF.Net email is sponsored by: Discover Easy Linux Migration Strategies >from IBM. I'm a little hazy about how this stuff actually works, but I think we can create a CanDo "translation" using SchoolTool's internationalization machinery that could switch the terminology to match your usage. ---Tom |
