#2 Unable to change camera exposure settings

I have a Nikon D3000 when it's plugged in and on it calls it "Vendor( 4b0) Device( 424)". I have several issues the main one being that from the camera control menus I can only set the ISO, Image Size, and White balance. All the other options are either grayed out and unavailable, or in the case of flash has the drop-down menu but only "Flash off" is listed as an option. This is the same no matter what setting I physically put on the camera. I am not sure if this issue is related to the software (ie. a bug) or if it's a limitation of the camera, that these settings cannot be changed remotely.

Also, Haven't managed to get anything displayed in the large black box on the right, or in the smaller rectangular box in the middle (upper left). Only the left-most view window shows the pictures that have been taken, along with color graphs for RGB. I'm not sure if that just means I'm missing something, or not doing something correctly.
