Differential tones

About differential tones

Due to non-linear response of the basilar membrane at the inner ear, when two intense frequencies reach our ears is posible to hear a third one which frequency correspond to the difference of the first two. This is known as differential tone and is a special case of combination tone.
For example, if you are playing a double stop interval with a violin intensely, suppose a C at the second (≈523.25Hz) string and a F at the first one (≈698.46Hz), perhaps you can hear a third music tone of 175.21Hz (F3).
Differential tones are a perceptual phenomena that sometimes is used on musical composition. The best example is the spectral music.
