I encountered the same problem & was able to find the
solution.
The root cause is that the plugin in the exporter binaries
(that you downloaded from SourceForge) is compiled with the
MAX 4.2 SDK. You need to recompile the plugin with the
MAX 4.0 SDK and it will work.

Under MAX 6.0 and SP1. When the command panel is in modify
mode and the object to be exported is selected, then the
mesh export freezes. A workaround is to avoid being in
modify mode when exporting.
