Hi just thought I'd mention this, in case it's hit you: most versions of unix have automatically running 'cron' jobs that run at various times to accomplish a specific task. one of them, updating the local 'locate' cache, runs once a day, and hammers on the disk for 5 minutes. since you don't need this, you can disable it... exactly how may differ with different versions of redhat. 7.2 has a program called 'anacron'; its entries are in /etc/cron*. editing these, or removing anacron all together, may help if you've seen the machine's audio start skipping for a few minutes. -paulb =========================================================================== pa...@oa...
