Platform: Windows XP SP1
BZFlag version: 1.10.6-1

If 'My Documents' is set to a folder inside a UNC network 
share (right click on My Documents and set the Target 
folder location to something like 
\server_name\sharename\path\My Documents), then 
BZFlag doesn't save its configuration to the 'My BZFlag 
Files' location on exit.

I noticed this because I installed BZFlag on a computer 
where My Documents was redirected using Group Policy 
to a network share.

I guess there's something wrong with the code that 
doesn't like UNC paths. I haven't tested with mapped 
network drives but my guess is that it would work OK.

dangit- forgot about that.
programming cross-platform is hard.
whatever the solution is, it should be user-configured, and
not auto-decteded

there should be a list of places to check, varying depending
on the OS, like windows it would be the bzflag root, than
the bzglag exe dir than...
*nix systems would be ...

and if not found, it would be written right into the deafult
dir (windows: my documents, *nix: user dir, mac: and so on)
and if thats not available, go to the next one on the list.
if to no avil., dont use a config.

It is cross-platform but there is also Windows specific code 
that uses 'My Documents' to save stuff.

The problem with what you suggested (storing the config file 
in the binary directory) is that under Unix style systems users 
may not be able to write to the binary directory, only to their 
home directories. So the fix you suggested is actually 
platform specific itself.

bzflag is a cross-platform program.
rather, there should be an option, that if it detects the
config file in the biniary directory, it will use that.
otherwise, use the deafult config (unless somthing like that
is already implemented).
