I started Burrokeet some time ago whilst working at the University of the West Indies. Since then I have changed country and roles quite a few times. The upshot of all this is that I have not been actively working on Burrokeet for quite some time. I have already removed myself as admin from this project, this leaves Anil as the remaining admin. Anil is still at the University of the West Indies, where it is claimed work proceeds on Burrokeet. Hopefully we will see the fruits of this work released as Open Source through this project. The copyright for this code is currently held by my company based in the UK. We are no longer interested in protecting our interests in this code. The license adopted has always been an extremely open one, so this will not affect any users of the code, you have always been free to do whatever you want with it, even relicensing where necessary. However, it does mean that there is no longer any legal protection with respect to patents claims etc. My company is more than happy to sign over the copyrights to any non-profit organisation, or to an accredited educational institution in the developing world, that has the ability to protect the code base and its contributors. If no such candidate is forthcoming we will place this code in the public domain and let anarchy take its course (this is not necessarily a bad thing). Finally, it is worth noting that I still work on Apache Forrest[1], which is the publishing engine used in Burrokeet. That project is going from strength to strength and if anyone here finds the time to update the version of Forrest being used in Burrokeet you will immediately get access to a great many improvements in publishing technologies. Hi, I am but a humble end user but I am very interested in using burrokeet as a framework for presenting learning objects I develop at Vienna university. I indicated some problems with running burrokeet, starting with http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=3D9337564&forum_id= =3D39362 It would be great if the project got another boost. The money is no longer there for me in tools like Burrokeet, so I am unlikely to be active here for the foreseeable future. I'll do my best to help you pick up the mantle though. > I would like to continue work on the Content > Package Editor to make it more user friendly. Does anyone have any > suggestions ? The Lepido project is pretty much dead. There is no activity over there and it may well be put into hibernation soon. However, the tools within Lepido are great. It would be wonderful if renewed activity here also resulted in renewed activity in Lepido. Other options? Hand crafted code - this is not a good idea in my view. The EMF provides a great framework that makes tracking changes in the IMS Manifest schema (and other related schemas) very easy. This is why I originally opted for the EMF code. In fact this would be a major advantage of EMF over Lepido as well. Although Lepido has great tools for building Cocoon based apps. If it were me, I would use EMF. > Also, I would like to create a new release of Burrokeet which includes > the servlet engine that is now hosted at Apache Forrest. Great, I did promise to do a new release a while back, unfortunately time is against me. Ross |

It has been awhile since any major work has been done on Burrokeet and I would like to change that. I would like to continue work on the Content Package Editor to make it more user friendly. The current editor is currently built using the Eclipse Modeling Framework. There has been some improvements to the code generation of EMF since the editor was first build. I was wondering if we should continue using EMF or explore a new method of developing the editor. I had attempted this some time ago and I was looking at the Lepido project as a possible source for developing the editor but that project does not seem to active at this time and it;s future seems to be uncertain. Does anyone have any suggestions ? Also, I would like to create a new release of Burrokeet which includes the servlet engine that is now hosted at Apache Forrest. There have also been a number of minor changes in the editor code that have never made it to a release version. Anil Ramnanan |

Hi, regarding my installation problems: I tried to install on Windows XP (the previous attempt was on Windows 2k) and got another bunch of error messages when trying to start the forrest-server. Sure, thank's for your attention. I enclose my burrokeet configuration file. By the way: since these are really support questions - should we switch to the support list? Best regards, h.h. |

Ross, thank's for your reply to my question. I am not behind a proxy and usually there are no (or very little) network problems on the wlan the machine is running on. In particular I easily updated all components as offered on the Search menu. (This was probably not a good idea because it produced a lot of unfunctional stuff. Anyway, after this I installed from scratch, so I have a vanilla burrokeet package.) Here is the awful truth I get from the error log :-) I should add that in running forrest proper fetching missing plugins works allright. So let me ask a few questions to figure out why this is not happening: Do you have an active network connection when doin gthis first run? Are you behind a proxy? If you point your browser at http://forrest.apache.org/plugins/ do you see a list of the avaiable plugins? Ross |

I have recently discovered the Burrokeet project which seems an excellent idea. I am at the moment experimenting with learning objects (in philosophy) and this approach - linking content packages into an Apache Forrest Framework - is fascinating and could be very useful in my work. I have succeded in installing burrokeet (under WIndows 2000) and it seems to=20 run properly. Unfortunately, the most important step does not work. When I want to run the Test server I get a complaint that the server cannot install required plugins. Trying to get around this I attempted to install the IMS-Plugin into Apache-Forrest directly and build a site within the forrest environment. This seemed to work up until the last step when the server told me that access was denied to the IMS-Plugin. Since I am very much an IT amateur this is as far as I could get. I would be grateful for some hints on how to proceed, if you can find the time. Feature Requests item #1021900, was opened at 2004-09-03 15:41 Message generated for change (Comment added) made by rgardler You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=638902&aid=1021900&group_id=104679 Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. Category: Eclipse Integration Group: 0.2 >Status: Closed >Resolution: Out of Date Priority: 5 Submitted By: Ross Gardler (rgardler) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: Integrate Open Office Editor Initial Comment: Here is some documentation I dug up from the OpenOffice SDK. There is an OfficeBean Java Bean component in the SDK. From the documentation: "With the OfficeBean, a developer can easily write Java applications, harnessing the power of OpenOffice.org. It encapsulates a connection to a locally running OpenOffice.org process, and hides the complexity of establishing and maintaining that connection from the developer. It also allows embedding of OpenOffice.org documents within the Java environment. It provides an interface the developer can use to obtain Java AWT windows into which the backend OpenOffice.org process draws its visual representation. I started eclipse with the "-clean" switch. I then had occasion to open an sxw file from withi Eclipse. Of course, I expected OpenOffice to open externally, but now, it opened as an editor within Eclipse! The eclipse menus changed to the OOo menus and I could proceed as normal. Category: Eclipse Integration Group: 0.2 Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Submitted By: Ross Gardler (rgardler) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: Integrate Open Office Editor Initial Comment: Here is some documentation I dug up from the OpenOffice SDK. These windows are then plugged into the UI hierarchy of the hosting Java application. The embedded document is controlled from the Java environment, since the OfficeBean allows developers to access the complete OpenOffice.org API from their Java environment giving them full control over the embedded document, its appearance and behavior." Take a look at the WebCT demo of the Burrokeet website (linked from the burrokeet home page). This is #2 (but in webCT rather than ATutor). I have tested in ATutor in the past. This was done by exporting an IMS Learning Object and importing it into WebCT or ATutor. I did this by hand, but have started to code ANT targets to do it for us. We really need a wizard within Burrokeet to create the IMS object and upload it to ATutor. There are, that I remember (it was a while ago now, I currently use #1 for my own courseware), 3 stages to creating an HTML based IMS Learning Object: 1 - create the site without any navigation etc. This can be done by generating a version of the site using the "plain-dev" skin 2 - create a version of the IMS Manifest with relevant extensions. This is done with the "createManifest_HTML" target of the src\org\burrokeet\build\packaging.build.xml file 3 - zip all this together to create the IMS Learning Object Let me know how far you get with this. We should really document it in a bug report when we know what works so that we can then create a wizard. This has come up a few times on the list and is a common user requriement. |

Dr. Bernard is planning to use Burrokeet to run a course for some students in Grenada. The course content consists mainly of HTML files and images. Since Burrokeet does no have any user management features yet we are tying to figure out her options. Here is what we came up with. 1. Develop the course in Burrokeet and publish the course contents as a static website. Set up a discussion forum on the site so that students can discuss the course contents. 2. Develop the course in Burrokeet and use ATutor to deliver the course to the students. We know that ATutor can successfully use content created with Burrokeet. I think option #2 is a good idea. Any comments ? Regards, Anil Ramnanan |

Yes, although a learning object may not necessarily be an entire course, it may be a module, or even a part of a module. The Author is responsible for the actual breakdown of content and it granularity. This is where Burrokeet excels, it focuses on reusing content from many different sources in new learning objects. There is no easy way to reuse existing content in current LCMS systems. Burrokeet is a tool for bringing all that content, regardless of source format, into a single usable Learning Object with a consistent look and feel. Burrokeet does not then present that content to the user, the intention is that the Learning Object is imported into an LCMS for delivery. However, we are working on integrating an LCMS with Burrokeet directly. Ross |

I know Atutor can export a course as a certain=20 format....cant remember what the format is right now. but it should be on= =20 the atutor website. Shivan Jaikaran |

However, there are, linked from the home page, many demo's of content presented in different formats. One of those formats demonstrated is an IMS learning object imported into WebCT (of course, it can be imported into any LCMS supporting IMS) Ross |

Anil Ramnanan wrote: > I want to be able to export a content package that I created in > Burrokeet so that I can import it into appplications such as Moodle, > WebCT et. How do I do that ? OK I've done this a few times, but each time I've done it I've used a slightly different method. Last time I did it I started to create an ANT script to do it so that we could build a wizard (a much needed feature I think). Anyway, the first thing that we much do is ensure the IMS Manifest referes to HTML documents. We can do this by running it through an XSL stylesheet. I've created the first draft of the stylesheet and an ANT script to use it. See src/org/burrokeet/resources/stylesheets and src/org/burrokeet/build You need to run the ant script from within your project directory, this will create the required manifest in the site build directory. Next you need to run Forrest over your site so that it creates an HTMl version of the site without the naviagation. I've added a skin to Forrest to do this, unfortunately it is not yet complete. It works for the textual content of your site, but it also strips graphics. If you have graphics then you will need to enhance that skin. I also added support into the Forrest plugin to allow the site to be built with different skins. However, I don't think I have added that to the interface yet. So, you will need to run forrest over the site manually using the plain-dev skin. To do this do: "forrest site -Dproject.skin=plain-dev" This will create the site for you. Now you just ned to zip it all together and there is your IMS Learning Object. It would be great if you could add a wizard that pulls all these bits and peices together. I think most of the work is done apart from that. Ross |
