Yes, firewalls all over the place.  That would just prevent rather than
timeout, wouldn't it?

There's also SELinux, but again I think that would be prevention. 
Actually I've tried turning it off with no improvement.

Yes, it is run as root.

Not that I can see.  I'm guessing it's something like that due to a
less rigorous server installation, I just don't know what, or where to
look.

The night before last even the backup for the other machine on the lan
failed too (first time ever) so I turned off librsync on that one and
that made it work last night.
