Ok, that seems to have worked.
I ran a backup from the command line and it finished!
I was a little surprised that the command returned within about fifteen
minutes saying the backup had finished although it clearly hadn't.  The
log gave the finish time about half an hour later.

Now to find out what's wrong with the Fedora setup.
