#4 descriptions in dropdowns ugly; invalid xhtml

In dropdown lists of descriptions, the description is
often truncated by the formatting string.

Perhaps the truncated string should have ... at the end.

Strings that are not truncated have an extraneous space
at the beginning of them "( foo)".

If & is in the description then it is converted to
& and then truncated back to &am giving illegal xhtml.
