Hi, I don't like that "buildtool dist" does a cleandir first, before creating the distribution archive. I would rather suggest that it always created a copy of the working directory and then does a "cleandir" inside that directory. cd "${srcdir}" distdir="${BT_PKG_NAME}-${BT_PKG_VERSION}" mkdir "${distdir}" for i in *; do test x"$i" != x"${distdir}" \ && test x"$i" != x"CVS" \ && cp -rf "./$i" "${distdir}/" done (cd "${distdir}" && cleandir) tar cf - "${distdir}" | gzip -9 > "${distdir}.tar.gz" This way the distribution files are put in the root of the project, which I like more, too. As I have tried to build a little library using buildtool I got some insight into libtool and have some ideas for the next patches: I'd like to have a --quiet mode, but I don't know how to implement. Perhaps you find some of the additional warnings in patch-bt_config_envs_in useful. I like especially the -Wwrite-strings. patch-bt_config_general_in generates a features.h file listing all the features configured for the package. This file is meant especially for libraries to let other packages check the available features. The patch also contains some uppercase-lowercase mapping allowing features to contain special characters like '-' and '_'. patch-bt_logic_base_in defines a new function btcmn_status that may be controlled by the proposed --quiet option. patch-bt_logic_compile_in fixes some compiler flag warnings. Did you use the grep in the last part for a special reason? The common pattern looks more obvious to me. patch-bt_logic_library_subr_in uses the += assignment syntax which I have been missing for so long. And now it's there. Yippieeeh!!! patch-buildtool_buildtool_in makes the help/usage messages more consistent. patch-sh_head_in finally adds the implementation of btcmn_status. Greetings, Roland |

Hi, I'd like to have a function btcmd_status whose output can be suppressed using the command line switch --silent. The function bt_try_auto in /bt_logic/base.in should then use btcmn_status instead of btcmn_warn when entering or leaving a directory. I don't find that changing a directory is worth a warning. :) The effect that I want to reach is that "buildtool build --silent" behaves like "make -s". Roland |

Hi, /WISH/ I'd like to have the warning option "-W" included in bt_logic/compiler.in. /RATIONALE/ Most users of GCC only use the "-Wall" warning level. The additional warnings of "-W" can lead to more portable code if applied correctly. Among the warnings are "comparison of signed and unsigned", "unused functions/variables/arguments". These warnings often appear when I compile programs that (for example) use and "int" where "size_t" would be more appropriate (strlen returns a size_t). The developers should be noticed of theses usages which may lead to unportable code and (even worse) undefined behaviour. Roland |

Hi, I cleaned up the code for compile.in. These are the changes: -Wlocal-foo would have been interpreted as a linker option by the old compile.in. The new one only considers -Wl,* a linker command. -march=* and -mcpu=* are interpreted as optimization options. Unknown options are recognized without using grep. Roland |

Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development. With many thanks for your participation, Benno Luthiger PS: The results of the survey will be published under http://www.isu.unizh.ch/fuehrung/blprojects/FASD/. We have set up the mailing list fa...@we... for this study. Please see http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/mailinglist_en.html for registration to this mailing list. _______________________________________________________________________ Benno Luthiger Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich 8092 Zurich Mail: benno.luthiger(at)id.ethz.ch _______________________________________________________________________ |

I haven't tested the following, but it should work. To use the convert type to achieve this, you have to define a new conversion from .y to .c. E.g: BT_CONVERT_SUFFIXES+=y convert_y_c() { yacc ${BT_FROM_NAME} mv y.tab.c ${BT_TO_NAME} } Same for lex sources. (You could also go directly from .y to .o and .y to .po by adding the right bt_compile_* calls at the end, though I'd say it's better to leave this to the existing conversions, in case they need to change in the future). Then, listing the respective .c files as dependancies for your target should DTRT. That is, if you have a parser.y file, then list 'parser.c' as part of BT_SOURCES in your program target. Hope it works. -- Julio M. Merino Vidal <jm...@me...> The NetBSD Project - http://www.NetBSD.org/ |

Did anyone ever try to build a project which uses lex and yacc? What kind of target must I use? Is there an example on how to do this? I guess it must be the convert type, but I couldn't figure it out from the documentation (the documentation on the convert type is quite small). I'm using buildtool 0.16 (from cvs). Oh sorry... it has been a while since I tried Buildtool on Cygwin, and it's indeed broken. I'll remove the note from the page until it's fixed, which may require several changes (not only during its build itself). Hi. The cygwin is in supported platforms, but i don't see workaround for file extensions in buildtool. On cygwin executables has extension .exe. So where in buildtool-0.15\bt_logic\Makefile You try to do this ${CC} ${LDFLAGS} oodate.o -o oodate ${STRIP} oodate I got error at compilation, becouse I have no oodate, but I have oodate.exe. Autotools use OBJEXT and EXEEXT variables and define this lines as follow: ${CC} ${LDFLAGS} oodate${OBJEXT} -o oodate${EXEEXT} ${STRIP} oodate${EXEEXT} |

I've applied the patch, since POSIX says that the right way to use arith expressions is this. So what needs fixing is bt_sh. And I think I've found the problem: lex/yacc interpreters seem to generate incorrect parsers for the arith code. Tru64's native make doesn't know the '+=' construction: CFLAGS = -I. CFLAGS += -I.. all: @echo ${CFLAGS} With newer/expanded makes you would expect the echo statement to yield: -I. -I.. This patch fixes the use of variables inside $(()) constructs. This is POSIX compliant.
