That is understandable. It is probably the number one missing feature in the bugzilla WebService API - but _lots_ are missing. You can check the "Webservice" component in the mozilla bug base. There is a bug for a "simple search": https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=398281 If you read it, you get an impression of the speed with which bugzilla moves.. :-/ It does however move. It did initially, but focus has changed here.
