By "tried hard" I thought you meant that you were using the Mac
directory defaults that I sent many months ago; hence the reason
for my bug reports.  A bit opaque, you might agree :o)  How about:

WINE   character, path to ‘wine’ binary file, which/locate tried if not 
given
